CAPSS was established in 2001 as an autonomous defence research and analysis body for research and focused analyses on issues related to national security, defence, and aerospace issues in the evolving strategic and international security environment.

Gp Capt RK Kashyap is a WSO with over 3300 hours on fighters and transport aircraft. The officer was the first lot of WSOs inducted on Su-30Ks in 2000 and was instrumental in conceptualising the WSO training programme in IAF in 2005/2006. He founded the Weapon School for WSOs and is alumnus of Higher Command, Army War College, Mhow. The officer participated in the 1999 Kargil Operations. He has commanded a combat Sqn and a flying Station besides holding Staff appointments in Command and at Air Headquarters. He served as a Senior research fellow in MP-IDSA in 2024. His areas of research include history of warfare, air power, modern combat, geo-politics and international relations. He can be contacted on rkkashyap1911@gmail.com
